Selling in shops or online marketplaces?

EAN and UPC numbers must be licensed from GS1. Retailers and marketplaces check that a number belongs to your brand, and a made-up or resold number can clash with someone else's product. Get a company prefix, or single GTINs where offered, from your local GS1 member organization, then make the barcode here. ITF-14 carries the GTIN of a case. Code 128 and Code 39 are for your own labels, stock and assets, and need no registration.

1

Pick the barcode type and enter the number or text. For EAN and UPC, leave off the last digit and the check digit is added for you.

2

Set the size and bar height. Retail barcodes start at GS1’s nominal 100% size, with the quiet zone built in.

3

Download SVG or PDF for print, or PNG at 300, 600 or 1200 dpi. Everything is made in your browser.

Questions

Can I make up my own EAN or UPC number?+

Not for products sold in shops or on marketplaces. Retail numbers (GTINs) are licensed from GS1 to a brand, and retailers check them. A made-up or resold number can clash with another product. Code 128 and Code 39 are free to use for your own labels, stock and assets.

What is a check digit?+

The last digit of an EAN, UPC or ITF-14 number, calculated from the others with GS1’s mod-10 rule. Scanners use it to catch misreads. Enter the number without it and the generator adds it; enter it and the generator tells you if it is wrong and what it should be.

Which format should I download for print?+

SVG or PDF. Both are vectors, so the bars keep exact widths at any size. If you must use PNG, pick the resolution of the printer; the file is saved at that DPI so it places at the right size.

What is the quiet zone?+

The blank margin either side of the bars. Scanners need it to find where the barcode starts and ends: 11 modules left and 7 right for EAN-13, 9 each side for UPC-A, and 10 for ITF-14 and Code 128. The downloads include it, so do not crop it or let artwork crowd it.

Can I make the barcode smaller or shorter?+

EAN and UPC can scale from 80% to 200% of the nominal size. Cutting the bar height, called truncation, makes retail barcodes harder to scan and GS1 advises against it. Test a printed sample with a scanner before a full run.

Learn the terms

  • EAN-13EAN-13 is the 13-digit retail barcode printed on most consumer products outside the US and Canada. It encodes a GTIN-13: a GS1 prefix, company number, item reference and check digit.
  • UPC-AUPC-A is the 12-digit retail barcode used mainly in the US and Canada. It encodes a GTIN-12, and adding a leading 0 turns it into the equivalent 13-digit EAN-13 number.
  • Code 128Code 128 is a high-density linear barcode that can encode all 128 ASCII characters. It uses three code sets, A, B and C, and a mod-103 check character.
  • Code 39Code 39 is a self-checking linear barcode that encodes 43 characters: digits, uppercase letters, space and - . $ / + %. An asterisk marks the start and stop of every symbol.
  • ITF-14ITF-14 is an Interleaved 2 of 5 barcode that carries a 14-digit GTIN on outer cartons and cases. It is often printed with a thick bearer bar frame so it reads well on corrugated board.
  • GTINA GTIN, or Global Trade Item Number, is the GS1 number that identifies a product or trade item. It comes in 8, 12, 13 and 14-digit forms and is issued through GS1 member organizations.
